Following the launch of the Roll Back Malaria initiative in 1998 (RBM), malaria endemic countries in Africa were supported by WHO and partners to undertake a situational analysis of their control activities and developed national malaria strategic plans most of which expired in 2005. In 2006, several countries developed their second generation malaria national strategic plans to guide their control programs. Most of these strategies are five-year plans that run from 2006-2010 and will therefore need to be reviewed and revised in the coming year. In addition, some countries have now nearly scaled up the package of malaria control tools and are moving towards sustained control, while a select number of countries are assessing their readiness for pre-elimination., all of which implies adjustments to their malaria control strategies and programs. Though 2010 coincide with the end of the UN decade for Roll Back Malaria, the momentum should be maintained towards the attainment of RBM and MDG 2015 targets and beyond. Partnership coordination, harmonization and alignment with countries priorities will be critical for provision of high quality technical support to countries in the process of reviewing and updating their national malaria strategic plan. In this context the RBM Harmonization working group has created the malaria strategic planning workstream.
